Assisted Fishing
Fishy Fun!
In this off-the-wall comedy, Dewey Winfield has aspired all of his life to take down his life-long foe, Jimmy Valentine in Jimmy's own sponsored deep sea fishing tornament. Always lacking the registration fee, Dewey takes on an emergency job opportunity to run an assisted living facility full of zany, elderly stereotypes. With the help of his age-defined friends and an electro-current pickle in the water, Dewey begins his march towards becoming Fishing King.
A Comedy That's Actually...Funny!
I watched Assisted Fishing with middling expectations, not because of any preconceptions about the movie in particular, but because the vast majority of Hollywood comedies just...aren't...er...funny. Long gone are the likes of Peter Sellers' remarkable Inspector Clouseau character. What we have now are TV expatriates (often SNL alumni) doing really low-brow movies built around sight gags. Considering SNL hasn't been funny in decades (many decades at that), it's surprising to me that former cast members have made so many films.
Anyway back on "Assisted Fishing", this is "indie" stuff to be sure. The cast is chock full of great characters played by actors I don't remember having seen, but who I now want to see more of. The story revolves around "Dewey" wanting to get one up on his nemesis and helped by a "team" from a retirement home made up of some whacky-but-endearing characters. Without giving away too much (no spoiler alerts here), the gang gets involved in some...
A future cult classic
I'll admit, I'm a bit biased since I wrote and directed this movie - but if you like the off-beat comedies of the 80's - things like "Better Off Dead" with its Dancing cheeseburger or "Caddyshack" and the Dancing Gopher - then you will probably really enjoy "Assisted Fishing".
Its a family friendly movie with wacky characters and a heartfelt message about learning to love others more than yourself.
This movie may just end up as a cult classic - so get it now so you can tell your friends that you were cool enough to discover it first!
